The tank stores and settles, but the field line is what lets the water leave the system for good. Get the field line wrong and a brand new tank still won't fix a slow, backed up yard.
Laid for the ground, not just for the trench
A field line has to fall the right amount over its whole run so water moves through it evenly instead of pooling at one end and starving the other. On the coast that gets complicated fast. Sandy stretches drain quick but hold less back in a downpour, while heavy clay a few feet away can barely take water at all. Lines get bedded and run where the ground can actually take the load, away from driveways, parking pads and anywhere heavy vehicles will compact the soil over it, because compacted ground is one of the fastest ways to shorten a field line's life.
Why summer rain is the real test
The Gulf Coast gets heavy rain through the summer, and a field line that looked fine on a dry install day can get overloaded fast once storm season hits and the water table rises to meet it. Tree roots are the other slow threat, working into old or cracked line over years and choking flow long before anyone notices from the surface. A field line built with the coast's rain and ground in mind from the start is what keeps a wet patch of grass from turning into standing water in the yard.

What shows up on the surface started with the tank
A field line struggling to keep up is often the first visible sign that the tank hasn't been pumped in a while and is sending more solids downstream than it should. On an older property with a failing line, a fresh tank installation and a new field line often get planned together so the whole system is working off the same clean start.
